Dreading “Day 1”

When Starting Over, It’s Ok To Have A Lot Of “Day 1’s”.

It’s not easy starting something new. When you think of all the time it’s going to take to achieve your goal it can be overwhelming, frustrating, and easy to give up before you even start.

But, if you take it one day at a time, things become more manageable.

You chunk it all down into little pieces so that you can tackle one bit here and one bit there, you have an outline of what needs to be done, you set yourself attainable goals on a realistic timeline. You keep your end goal in mind and track your milestones. Suddenly it doesn’t seem so overwhelming, right?

If you’re learning a new skill, each day you work to build, strengthen, and hone that skill. You read about it, you learn about it, you practice doing it. By the time a month passes and you look back, you can see your progress from day 1 to day 30.

However, if you are learning to undo something, like a bad habit, it’s not as easy to take it one day at a time. Maybe it’s a half day at a time. Sometimes it’s one hour at a time. Or five minutes.

For people who are dealing with addictions, this is reality. It’s not easy going “one day at a time” because they haven’t experienced a sober day in years. Or decades. Sometimes the days just melt into…
